Qualification in Health Promotion fulfills the gap in pregraduate training of professionals in charge of to develop this strategy at different levels, which is gave at national level from November, 2007, coordinated by Health Promotion Chair of Public Health National School. OBJECTIVE: To assess the results from the first edition of this Qualification in Health Promotion (from November, 2007 to June, 2009). METHODS: This is a cross-sectional and evaluative research applied in the following provinces: Pinar del Río, Ciudad de La Habana, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus and Ciego de Avila with the participation of 116 graduates and 69 professors. RESULTS: The program design was on the base of the learning needs detection with 25 polled experts, there were 18 responses (72.2 %), 17 agree with all contents proposed (94.4 %), 5 of them proposed new contents and by means of regional methodological workshops. Staff included professionals, most physicians and pedagogs, the 50% or more with a level of assistant professors (62.3 %), master and with a 11-20 years teaching experience (34.7 %). Students most were women working mainly at local, municipal and provincial level, most pedagogs (31.1 %) and physicians (24.%), main motivations were to learn and to excel. In teaching process some major weakness were detected allowing the program modification. The staying was of 89.2%. Results of pre-test and post-test showed the learning level achieved. All students passed the courses and the final work and most with qualifications between excellent and well. CONCLUSIONS: The methodological process developed for planning and carrying out of teaching program allowed its appropriate development in each provinces. Provincial staff has a high scientific and teaching level. Student selection was according to proposed admission requirements. Training process was efficient and efficacious showed by results from learning achieved by graduates.
