Abstract

RODRIGUEZ ALONSO, Beatriz et al. Analysis of the formation program of the Hygiene and Epidemiology specialist in clinical trials. Educ Med Super [online]. 2011, vol.25, n.2, pp.17-28. ISSN 0864-2141.

The knowledge acquired in the comprehensive formation of the Hygiene and Epidemiology specialists should serve to conduct clinical trials in any phase and also community-based trials, taking the need of conducting quality experimental studies into account. A descriptive study was performed to identify the topics present in the formation programs of these specialists that might contribute to the carrying out of this type of research by the graduates. In-depth interviews were administered to Hygiene and Epidemiology residence professors in charge of the development of contents on scientific research and to coordinators in this specialty. Brainstorming-based technique was applied in these interviews to experts in the field of clinical trials, epidemiology and graduate education in clinical assays; the contents that a specialist must master were classified into general and specific. The formation programs for Hygiene and Epidemiology specialists comprise those contents that assist in the preparation for conducting clinical trials, specially the last version. However, since this contents is not integrated or taught as it should be, the acquisition of knowledge in this area is not accomplished and in practice, just the critical analysis of the published scientific literature is made. The professors do not have the required expertise to perform this task in practice.
