Methods: cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from December 2010 to February 2011. The universe of study was 416 first and second-year students from whom 138 made up the final sample. Results: the main reasons to opt for the medical career was "helping people" and/or "preference for medical career"; the main activities were debates, lectures and talks, being the latter the best for vocational guidance according to their opinion. Conclusions: over one third of the participants did not receive vocational guidance and most of them stated that vocational guidance activities were inadequate or void, all of which shows that there are difficulties in this area and the need of new strategies to support the formation of a relevant physician.
