Introduction: the present research work is part of a project of the Center for the Academic Development on Drug Dependence of the Medical University of Havana, with the objective of training psychologists in drug-related topics. Objectives: to describe the perception of competence for professional approach to addictions that the psychology students have at present and to identify learning requirements on this subject. Methods: the research study was non-experimental, cross-sectional and descriptive, with qualitative approach, so the sample selection was intentional. Twenty four 5^th year psychology students participated. The in-depth interview and the focal groups were used to gather information. Results: the students considered that they were competent to approach additions; however this competence is supported on general knowledge and skills inherent to the profession, but not on specific professional preparation for the care and prevention of addictions. Conclusions: these results confirmed the presence of learning requirements about addictions related to their diagnosis and intervention; additionally, the sub-competencies perceived as less developed are the ones related to procedures whereas the attitudinal ones have been more extensively formed.
