Abstract

FERNANDEZ SACASAS, José Ángel. Epistemological triangulation in the construance of the teaching/learning process in medicine. Educ Med Super [online]. 2012, vol.26, n.3, pp.459-466. ISSN 0864-2141.

Epistemology studies how the cognitive subject has an incidence on the object of knowledge. The object of study in medicine is the health/disease process in the human being -and its care- at individual scale (clinical medicine) and at population-wide (public health) through the implementation of the scientific method in the clinical and epidemiological variants. The acting subject splits into the professor and the student. Learning, understood as the process leading to knowledge, assessment and transformation of the object by the subject, implies mutual change that results in giving added value to each component of the epistemological dyad, that is, changing the object in health and taking the object characteristics by the subject at phenomenological level, and several degrees of essentiality. The three planes of interaction between the actors and the object are both necessary and supplementary and they are not subjected to compulsory sequencing, since theory does not have to always precede practice and simultaneity of the planes is rather a rule. The professor serves as a professional model to be reproduced by the student; he leads and corrects the interaction of that student with the object and the search and assimilation of the relevant theory. From an epistemological viewpoint, education at work, conceived by Professor Fidel Ilizastigui as the ruling principle of the Cuban medical education, is the educational dimension supporting learning.

Keywords : epistemology; disease/health process; teaching/learning process; education at work.
