The fundamentals for the proclamation of higher education reform law in 1962 and the main education-related antecedents were briefly presented, which are milestones of the steps taken by the Cuban revolution. The foundational character of this law, particularly in the medical sciences, was addressed. Likewise, the analysis of the public health situation in the island and the formation of the human resources were also presented. The general characteristics of the medical and odontological curricula, and the strategy for the creation of new medical faculties in Las Villas and Santiago de Cuba were examined. Finally, the assessment of the meaning of this reform and the presentation of the results from the first decade of the Revolution till the present time were set forth, with the formation of physicians and dentists under a conception of science and awareness in line with the new society that the Revolution intended to build in this country.
