Introduction:

The most common reason for hospitalization in orthopedic services are hip fractures, of which the most frequent are those of the femoral neck and pertrochanteric and / or transtrochanteric. There are several risk factors among adults age 60 and over, including living in a nursing home, mental decline, type of fracture, common social environment, and presence of systemic diseases associated with aging.

Objective:

To describe and analyze the most frequent hip fractures in older adults at Agustin O'Horan General Hospital, as well as to describe the bimonthly and annual distribution of the cases that occurred in the state of Yucatan.

Method:

Cross-sectional, descriptive and retrospective study that included subjects of both genders aged 60 years and over, who had been admitted for hip fracture from November 2015 to April 2019. The variables were used gender, age, two-month period, year, anatomical location and type of trauma, extracapsular and intracapsular classification.

Results:

Most of the patients were female (64.53%), the average age was 77.67 years. The highest number of cases had extracapsular fracture (62.25%), the transtrochanteric subtype was the most prevalent (35.78%). The largest number of cases occurred in 2016. January to April there the months with higher number of patients admitted.

Conclusions:

The prevalence of hip fractures in women over 60 years of age, corresponds to that reported at the national level.
