TAMAYO CARBON, Alicia María; PEREZ CORDOBA, Kenier Yossimar y CUASTUMAL FIGUEROA, Diana Katherine. Aesthetic surgery as a complement to functional reconstruction of the upper limb. Rev Cubana Ortop Traumatol [online]. 2024, vol.38 Epub 03-Jun-2024. ISSN 1561-3100.
Introduction:
The function of the upper limb is considered vital in most of the activities of daily living; therefore, its timely and effective reconstruction in the event of trauma with tissue loss is essential to guarantee the adequate quality of life of patients.
Objective:
To discuss the usefulness of plastic surgery as a complement to the functional reconstruction of the upper extremity through the presentation of two clinical cases.
Case presentation:
Two male patients are reported due to a history of forearm reconstruction with an abdominal flap four years ago. They went to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service of Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital because of aesthetic discomfort. They were treated in a complementary manner with combined techniques of liposuction, lipotransfer, transposition plasties (Z-plasty) and filling in order to provide better functional aesthetic result.
Conclusions:
The use of plastic surgery techniques allows obtaining a more natural and aesthetic result in the reconstructed upper limb. The effectiveness of these procedures is reflected in the high patient satisfaction.
Palabras clave : liposuction; Z-plasty; upper extremity; reconstruction; quality of life.
