Introduction:
Diabetic feet with toe deformities often experience altered mechanical forces and pressures. These changes can increase plantar pressure, which causes decreased blood flow and, consequently, ulcer development.
Objective:
To evaluate the effectiveness of percutaneous surgery in the treatment of diabetic foot deformities.
Methods:
A prospective interventional study was conducted in the Lower Limb Service of Frank País International Orthopedic Scientific Complex to evaluate patients with diabetic foot who underwent surgical treatment for foot deformities from September 1, 2021, to August 31, 2022. The sample consisted of 16 patients (32 feet) over 19 years of age, with type 2 diabetes mellitus and Meggit-Wagner type 0 diabetic foot.
Results:
Eeighty-seven and five percent of the patients were over 50 years of age, and the majority were women (93.75 %). Bilateral involvement was observed in 15 patients, although the deformities were not symmetrical. Central toes with plantar calluses and hallux valgus were the most common deformities. The only complications reported were delayed healing and superficial infection at the access site. All patients were satisfied with the outcome. The final evaluation, according to Kitaoka AOFA score, was considered excellent in 88.24 %.
Conclusions:
Minimally invasive surgery is an effective option for the treatment of patients with Meggit-Wagner type 0 diabetic foot and foot deformities.
