Objective: To demonstrate the importance of the correct diagnosis of canaliculitis, as well as the efficiency of the surgical treatment in the studied patients. Methods: Retrospective descriptive study of 12 patients with canaliculitis between January 2000 and May 2003. All of them underwent sample taking and growth of the lacrimal secretions. Uni- or bilateralness, number of affected canaliculus, time of evolution of the symptoms and exploration of the lacrimal ducts were analyzed. All the patients were operated on. Results: 50 % of the patients were 41-60 years old, 33 % were over 61 and 16.7 % were 20-40. Actinomicis israelii was isolated in 28.5 %, Cándida sp. Pneumococcus and positive coagulase Staphylococcus in 7.1 %, enterobacter in 14.4 % and 35.8 % were negative. The lacrimal duct in the affected canaliculi was permeable in 80 % and nonpermeable in 20 %. The surgical result was satisfactory in 86.7 % of the canaliculi that were operated on, and unsatisfactory in 13.3 %. Conclusions: Ages 41-60 predominated. The most common germ was Actinomicis israelii. The lacrimal duct was permeable in most of the affected canaliculi and it was observed a high effectivity with the applied surgical treatment
