SEDENO CRUZ, Ibis et al. Diagnosis and treatment of blepharitis caused by Demodex folliculorum . Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2006, vol.19, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3070.
Demodex folliculorum, a hair follicle mite, is a frequently extended parasite that causes chronic eczematous blepharitis, but its clinical diagnosis is rare. The patients that went to the Ophthalmological service with conventional treatment-resistant chronic blepharitis were studied for 6 months. Due to their clinical symptoms and the test findings such as scabs, cuff-like structures and a spur in the eyelid roots, the presumptive diagnosis of mite-caused blepharitis was made. Several eyelids were removed, confirming the live parasite present in 20 patients by an inmediate direct microscopic test. All of them were given a treatment based on yellow mercure oxide. Seventeen patients improved their health condition. It is stressed that Demodex folliculorum must be considered as causative agent when some patient is seen at hospital because of conventional therapy-resistant chronic blepharitis, since this illness is easy to be diagnosed and therapeutic results are good
