HERNANDEZ SILVA, Juan Raúl et al. Use of extracapsular extraction of crystalline through corneal scleral tunnel technique at “Ramón Pando Ferrer” Ophthalmology Institute, 1999-2006. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2006, vol.19, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3070.
The accelerated development of ophthalmology in Cuba in the last few years has led to the introduction of new surgical ocular techniques to treat cataract; some of them have been adapted from others, in order to improve their results by introducing optimizing concepts. A number of assessments on various preliminary outcomes have already been published. This paper was intended to determine the results achieved by Dr Hernández Silva-modified extracapsular extraction of crystalline through corneal scleral tunnel technique, which is performed at the Ocular Microsurgery Center . A prospective cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted, whose universe of study was all the patients with presenile and senile cataract diagnoses. These persons had been surgically treated with ECCE through corneal scleral tunnel technique at Ocular Microsurgery Center from January 1999 to January 2006. A sample was taken from a randomized simple sampling of 2 537 patients. Most of them were over 60 years. Corrected visual acuity increased by 5 lines in Snellen´s chart, with average surgically induced astigmatism of 1.02 D. Loss of endothelial cells was 8.3%. Few complications were encountered, being the most frequent rupture of posterior capsule and vitreous detachment
