Resumen

HERNANDEZ SILVA, Juan Raúl et al. Results of karate prechop technique in cataract surgery using phacoemulsification in “Ramón Pando Ferrer” Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology, 2002-2004. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2006, vol.19, n.1. ISSN 0864-2176.

Since 2000, new surgical procedures for the extraction of cataract had been implemented, thus a number of papers that assess different practices for this end have been published. This paper was aimed at determining the results of karate prechop technique in phacoemulsification. A prospective cross-sectional descriptive study was performed in which the universe of study was made up of all the patients (eyes) diagnosed with presenile and senile cataract and surgically treated with karate prechop technique using phacoemulsification from January 2000 to January 2004 at the Ocular Microsurgery Center . A simple randomized sampling provided a selected sample of 198 patients. The majority of these people were over 60 years. Corrected visual acuity improved 4 lines in Snellen´s chart as average. The surgically-induced astigmatism averaged 0,29 D whereas average time of ultrasound application was 1,26 minutes, according to the crystalline lens hardness. Just a few complications were faced, being the most common the rupture of posterior capsule and vitreous detachment

Palabras clave : Phacoemulsification; cataract.
