Resumen

PONS CASTRO, Lucy et al. Results of the surgical treatment of traumatic cataract at pediatric ages. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2010, vol.23, n.2, pp.209-218. ISSN 0864-2176.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the anatomical and visual results of the traumatic cataract surgery in children. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out from April to December 2009 in the "Ramón Pando Ferrer" Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology pediatric ophthalmology service. Forty six patients were studied aged 3-14 years, diagnosed with traumatic cataract and best corrected visual acuity under 0.4. The extracapsular extraction of the crystalline lens was performed with/without intraocular lens implant. The surgical results involving the anatomy, the best corrected visual acuity before surgery and after 4 months, and the immediate and late associated postoperative complications were analyzed. RESULTS: The most vulnerable age for traumatic cataract ranged 9 to 11 years, (45.6 %). From the etiological viewpoint, the contusive trauma, the left eye and the male sex predominated. Intraocular lenses were implanted in 84.8 % of patients, being the folding type the most frequent. The best corrected visual acuity post surgery in 19 eyes (41.4 %) was 0.5-0.7 and 19.5 % showed 0.7. Some of the immediate complications were the cyclitic membrane plus uveitis (39.1 %) whereas the late complications included pupil deformity in 19.6 % of the cases. CONCLUSIONS: The surgical treatment of traumatic cataract, with intraocular lenses represents the best option in children since it achieves good visual results at minimal complications, thus allowing good vision in the future.
