Resumen

JARENO OCHOA, Madelyn et al. Effectiveness of the corneal collagen crosslinking in the treatment of keratoconus. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2012, vol.25, n.2, pp. 243-253. ISSN 0864-2176.

Objective: to determine the effectiveness of corneal collagen crosslinking in patients with progressive keratoconus performed at “Ramón Pando Ferrer” Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology. Methods: a retrospective and descriptive study was performed in 30 patients (30 eyes) with progressive keratoconus, who underwent the corneal collagen crosslinking. Data were collected preoperatively on one month, 3 months, 6 months and one year. The studied variables were age, sex, stage of keratoconus, best corrected visual acuity, spherical equivalent, maximum topographic keratometry, some topographic indexes of keratoconus diagnosis, coma and optical pachymetry. Results: the female sex, the 20-29 y age group and the keratoconus stage II prevailed. The best corrected visual acuity increased from 0.65 ± 0.25 preoperatively to 0.74 ±0.23 after a year. The spherical equivalent decreased from -7.25 ± 4.48 to -6.39 ±4.20 diopters. The maximum topographic keratometry lowered from 50.76 ± 3.81 to 49.26 ±3.31 diopters. The topographic indexes were reduced. The coma error changed from 0.59 ±0.43 to 0.45 ±0.32 microns. Optical pachymetry of the pupil center ranged from 494 ±39.75 to 466 ±44.24 microns and thinner position of 484 ±45.86 to 450 ±51.12 microns. All results showed statistically significant differences in the first year. Conclusions: crosslinking is an effective treatment for progressive keratoconus that allows interrupting the evolution of this ectatic disease.
