RODRIGUEZ PARGAS, Aymed de la Caridad; SANTANDER ACOSTA, Ramón; JALILO HERNANDEZ, Sandra y ROJAS GONGORA, Kenia. Characteristics of cataracts in diabetic patients during one year at the ophthalmological center in Guyana. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.2, pp. 170-179. ISSN 1561-3070.
Objective: to characterize cataracts in diabetic patients existing in Guyana, and to determine the visual results of the surgery. Methods: a prospective, descriptive and observational study was conducted in 310 patients, who went to the eye care center of Guyana in the period from September 2012 through September 2013 and met the inclusion criteria. They were treated with the tunnel extracapsular extraction and placement of intraocular lens cataract surgery. The primary research source was individual medical histories. The statistical analysis of all the variables allowed obtaining their respective percentages. Results: male patients over 60 years of age, with total cataract and finger-count vision were predominant. In the group, 27,5 % did not have diabetic retinopathy and the main complication was posterior capsule opacity. Conclusions: after cataract surgery 85 % improved their vision, so this type of surgery was recommended for visual and therapeutic purposes.
