Abstract

HODELIN TABLADA, Ricardo. Francisco Argilagos´s contribution to universal ophthalmology and to Colombian anthropology. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.2, pp.1-5. ISSN 0864-2176.

Francisco Argilagos Ginferrer was a Cuban ophthalmologist who made important contributions to Ophthalmology and to other fields of knowledge, however, his work is not very well-known. The present article commented on Francisco's book "Aportes de Francisco Argilagos a la Oftalmología universal y a la Antropología colombiana" whose author is Dr. Rosaralis Santiesteban Freixas, PhD. The text, published in Colombia in 2015, under the sponsorship of the Culture, Youth and Gender Division of La Guajira Department, shows the excellent work developed by the physician. His greatest contribution was the creation, after experimental research on animals, of a red-free light filter that is currently present in the most modern ophthalmoscopes from all over the world. The book points out that Argilagos abandoned its academic career in Paris to return to fight for the independence of Cuba, standing out in the Guáimaro Assembly, and he was appointed colonel in the Cuban independence war. Argilagos´s contribution to the Colombian anthropology was also stated in the book. Argilagos published an extensive work where -in addition to his scientific literature- there are important books such as "Prosas Selectas", "El Nuevo queso camagueyano" and "Artículos de Propaganda Política". Finally, the author concludes that this book was written in an elegant style with scientific rigor, in which historical meticulousness is the fundamental pillar around which convincing arguments are placed, and that this text is a contribution to the Cuban and Latin American historiography.

Keywords : Francisco Argilagos Ginferrer; Colombian Anthropology; Cuban historiography.
