Resumen

TRUJILLO FONSECA, Katia Margarita et al. Visual quality and quality of life among patients undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2019, vol.32, n.1, e706.  Epub 30-Jun-2019. ISSN 0864-2176.

Objective:

To evaluated the impact of cataract surgery by phacoemulsification in the improvement of visual disability, quality of life relative to vision, quality of life and basic daily activities in senior adults.

Methods:

A longitudinal, prospective and observational study was made in 108 patients that underwent to cataract surgery with Faco-chop technique and IOL implantation in ICO Ramón Pando Ferrer to determinate the quality of life relative to vision (QLRV) and the functional capacity in patients before and after phacoemulsification. We evaluated by using the VisQol-15 questionnaire and Katz index. Visual acuity with and without correction, quality of life, and independence´s degree for daily life activities was taken and analyzed during the preoperative and postoperative. The results were overturned in graphics and tables of relative and absolutes frequencies. X2 test determined the relationship between variables.

Results:

The Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) gains 5 lines in Snellen chart. 99,7 % of patients considered have a Good and Very Good QLRV after surgery. An increment of the independence´s degree for daily life activities and of QLRV was showed as well the BCVA increase.

Conclusions:

Cataract caused visual disability, phacoemulsification with IOL implant is an effective and safety method to improved QLRV and functional capacity in patients that underwent to cataract surgery. VisQol-15 and Katz index are useful instruments to determinate QLRV and functionality after phacoemulsification.
