Physical, mental and social disabilities, closely related to the rise in life expectancy, are among the most serious problems that must be addressed in this decade and in the next century both in Cuba and at worldwide. With the objective of estimating the prevalence of physical disability in the elderly of Playa municipality, a descriptive crosswise study was carried out for which a sample of 962 older people was selected from 28 215 aged who lived in this territory from July 1st, 1995 to June 30th, 1996. The sample was chosen by means of a Multi-phase Stratified Sampling. Information was collected from the implementation of mental condition Minitest (MEM), Lawton´s index (IL) and a survey on biological and psychososial variables. A physical disability of 24.9 % was found, which increases with age and reachers 60.3 % (IC 52.1 - 67.4) in 80 years- old over olders. Females were predominant (29.9 %). Also, it was observed that physical disability decreases with increasing educational level and that level of satisfaction in daily activities and feelings of laziness are rated over 50 %.
