A descriptive study was performed in which most of surveyed physicians had insufficient knowledge on the control program of syphilis and also poor information on the objectives and functions of the family physicians. We observed a greater knowlodge regarding recent symptomatic shyphilis. Over 50 % of surveyed did not carry out adequate actions for promoting, preventing and controlling shyphilis and those that stated they did lacked knowledge enough to be really efficient. These professionals had no clear perception of the seriousness and susceptibility of shyphilis and 96 % of them are not prepared for correctly implementing the control program of shyphilis in their health area.
