All infants born in gynecobstetric hospital in the City of Havana were examined for a month. It was found that there was a relationship among low birth weight and smoking in pregnancy, maternal age under 20 years and weight gain lower than 8 Kg. Smoking before pregnancy was not significant. Given the high prevalence of our smoking female population, it would be possible to reduce by 21 % the number of low birth weight infants if women quitted smoking at the beginning of pregnancy.
