Some formal aspects and the contents of the Cuban medical reviews emerged from 1881 to 1885 were described. Among them there are the first review of a scientific group exclusively designed for physicians; also, the first publication which recorded the clinical data of cases seen at a health institution and the first review devoted to promote the scientific development in a hinterland region of the country. This article is aimed at being another modest contribution to the history of the Cuban medical literature as a way of facilitating the knowledge about such an important component of the cultural heritage of the nation.
