CASTANEDA ABASCAL, Ileana  y  SOLIS SOLIS, Susana. Desigualdades atribuibles al género entre cirujanos(as): Ciudad de La Habana. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2002, vol.28, n.2, pp.112-148. ISSN 0864-3466.

A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed to identify the gender differences in general surgery specialists and other surgical specialties in the City of Havana during 1998. One hundred and twenty two surgeons, 61 males and 61 females, from ten selected hospitals were surveyed. To output the proposed objectives, abbreviated measures were used like the percentage. To find out if there were differences between female and male surgeons as to the studied variables, the homogeneity test was applied with a confidence rate of 95%. The study evidenced that in the productive role, there was inequality between the sexes only in administrative responsibilities whereas in the reproductive role, there was inequalities between the sexes as to house chores, planning of family economy, responsibility over the taking care of children, help to do school homework, attendance to school meetings and concern about the children's hygiene, being the females the most affected. In the community management, there were differences only in the incorporation to the Communist Party since the male gender was prevalent. In relation to differences between female and male surgeons regarding health, the female sex participation in recreational activities was lower whereas her systemic manifestations, stress and tiredness were higher. On the other hand, men were more represented in the alcohol beverages consumption.
