ZULUETA TORRES, Daysi; ROMERO IGLESIAS, María C; TOLEDO BORRERO, Emilia  y  FERRER ZULUETA, Nayra. Patrones de alimentación y evaluación nutricional en niños deshabilitados. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2003, vol.29, n.2, pp.111-116. ISSN 0864-3466.

There are children with neurological disturbances of different kinds, who, according to the diagnoses, do not require diet treatment as a therapeutical basis but should be guaranteed an optimal nutritional status. The objective of this paper was to devise feeding models for these disabled boys and girls and assess their effect on the nutritional status. The latter is carried out by determination of weight and height. The index used and the cut-off points for the assessment were Low weight: percentile under 10; Normal weight: from percentile 10 to 90 and Overweight: percentile over 90. The first index measured in all the children was age weight and whenever possible, height weight was also estimated. In re-assessment, the arm circumference indicator was added. 37,8 % of children was rated as low weighters, so they required suitable feeding models. 7-12 years- old children were the most affected followed by 3-7 years old children. 19% of the children had mild or moderate anemia; therefore, they required iron-rich foodstuffs in addition to a drug therapy. Five dietary models were prepared: 780, 1020, 1200, 1 500 and 1 680 (kcal/day), which contributed 60% of the recommended energy intake for these children to be guaranteed by the institution. The re-assessment of cases revealed an improved nutritional status, with changes in age weight canals
