Since the end of the XIX century the first cases of «black tooth» or «mottled enamel» were reported , but it is not until the 30’s and 40’s of the XX century that they are associated with the presence of fluorine in water and with the lower prevalence of caries in the population. That’s why in the 50’s the WHO recommended the use of fluorides to prevent dental caries. Information referring to the historical development of the fluoridation of water and salt in the world and in Cuba, and about the main forms of utilization of fluorides to prevent dental caries is given
