Resumen

CASTILLO GUZMAN, Antonio; ARMAS ROJAS, Nuris B; ECHARTE MARTINEZ, Julio C  y  GONZALEZ GRECK, Omar. Cost-effectiveness of two treatment options of mitral stenosis. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2004, vol.30, n.4. ISSN 0864-3466.

A full cost-effectiveness-type economic evaluation aimed at determining the most effective and less costly treatment for mitral stenosis was made. The research study was performed in the Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery Institute. Data was taken from literature reviews, non-structured interviews to health care staff, medical histories, pharmaceutical, surgery, hemodynamics and accounting departments and also from the administration of surveys to patients. The universe of study was made up of all the patients who underwent either percutaneous (50) or surgical (57) procedure in the period 1991-2002. The results were given as absolute frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. It was proved that, at similar levels of effectiveness, the optimal option is the less costly, that is, the percutaneous ballon mitral valvuloplasty, according to the conclusions of this paper.

Palabras clave : HEALTH ECONOMICS; ECONOMIC EVALUATION; COST-EFFECTIVENESS; CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY; MITRAL VALVULOPLASTY.
