A retrospective descriptive study was undertaken to examine how the conception of the functions of the nursing staff and its influence on the development of the profession have evolved. Theoretical methods like analysis, synthesis and the historical-legal method were used. The historical background revealed the concern about defining and restricting the functions of the nursing staff both in the professional team and the multidiscipline as well, and the importance of this issue so that the nursing professionals can respect and demand respect for the functions of all the members of the health care team, thus acknowledging the value of their individual work and promoting respect to professionalism, dignity, rights and values of all the members of the working team.
