Taking as a basis a human situation showing the serious difficulties in communication that may exist in caring for critically ill patients and their relatives, this paper gave psychological elements that explain the high demand of human sensitivity, compassion and support from the medical team as well as their involvement and the stressing impact upon them. It also stated that health professionals and technicians must increase their concern about the humanitarian formation of the auxiliary staff since this personnel generally are not aware of the high significance of their personal potentialities at the healthcare services. Finally reflections were made to raise the conscience of the health team that this is one of the medical assistance situations requiring the highest expression of medical vocation which every health worker has in greater or lesser extent
