Some data on the life and work of Dr Jesse William Lazear, one of the members of the medical commission sent to Cuba by the US government in 1900 in order to do a research of the prevailing infectious diseases in the island, particularly in the field of etiology and yellow-fever prevention, was provided. Details were given about his work as member of this commission, making emphasis on his position in favor of Finlay´s theory that in principle he was able to confirm, although he laid down his life in this endeavor. This paper is aimed at paying a modest homage of acknowledgement, gratitude and respect to this martyr and hero of science on his 140 th birthday to be celebrated soon
