DIAZ LLANES, Guillermo. Perceived control by middle-aged women as educators for preschool child´s sexuality. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2007, vol.33, n.1. ISSN 0864-3466.

The social construction of gender has helped the public health systems to identify the woman as a vulnerable group in most of the countries. Nevertheless, there are subgroups in this big group such as middle-aged females (40-59 years) and caregivers looking after sick people, elders and children who, by a number of reasons, will be more exposed to psychological stress, low subjective well-being and thus to various diseases, basically due to poor control on the many roles that they play. The present study researched into the perceived control on the role of educator for preschool child´s sexuality since this is an important part of the general care demanded by this age group. To this end, a research-action design was used on the basis of focal groups. Forty-one middle-aged women, who looked after preschool children in the health area of “Carlos J. Finlay” polyclinics in Mariano, participated. They were applied Mastery Measure adapted from Kimberly et al, before and after intervention. The result was 68.2 % increase in the number of females with perceived control over their roles after the intervention, which indicated among other factors, that they admit their role as subjects and objects of education for sexuality and as disseminators and receptors of those values related to it

Palavras-chave : Perceived control; subjective well-being; gender; education for sexuality.
