CAZULL IMBERT, Irayma; RODRIGUEZ CABRERA, Aida; SANABRIA RAMOS, Giselda  y  HERNANDEZ HEREDIA, Raúl. Training of 4 th to 9 th grades students in first aid practice. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2007, vol.33, n.2. ISSN 0864-3466.

Introduction: the medical, psychological and pedagogic fundamentals supporting the social and educational need of creating a first aid culture from the tender years of life. Objectives: to design a program to train 4 th to 9 th grade students in first aid practice. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in schools located in Guantánamo municipality with theoretical, empirical and statistical methods to identify learning needs and interest. Among the fundamental empirical procedures were interviews, surveys, expert criteria and triangulation of methods. Results: it was confirmed that lack of knowledge to face emergency situations predominated in the studied students. The suggested program was structured so that the students could receive training in the necessary topics to be able to take up adequate behaviour in the face of the main extra-hospital mortality causes once they have finished their primary education level. For the program implementation, several teaching tools were designed. The triangulation of methods allowed accepting the suggested program as valid and feasible after having been evaluated by experts. The qualifications attained by both students and teachers in the output test were optimal. It was suggested that the school with its teachers, students, pioneer´s organization and boyscout movement was suggested as the ideal path to offer organized and controled training in life-saving. Conclusions: the users positively assessed the contribution of the program to the consolidation of values and responsible behaviours in relation to individual and collective health.
