A study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge on dengue in San Mateo, Libertad municipality, Anzoátegui, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, from May to June, 2007. The universe was composed of 15 000 inhabitants and a sample of 535 that were selected by a simple randomized method. The children aged 5-17 that were included in the sample lived in the houses of the adults that were selected. The persons that did not want to take part in the study were used as an exclusion criterion. A survey of knowledge on dengue was done previous validation in another locality by means of a pilot study carried out in the studied sample. The questions were evaluated by points. The results were expressed in percentages and confidence intervals. A considerable number of patients proved to be deficient in the survey, which showed a great lack of knowledge on this disease. There is no information on the symptoms, mechanism of acquisition of the disease, its transmitter agent and, therefore, its prevention. Most of the information on this topic is disseminated by radio.
