Introduction The category Professional Competency is leading the orientation of the strategic changing processes that have been taking place in several countries in the last decade. In 1997, the National Commission of Competence and Professional Performance was created in Cuba; since then, scientific-technical updating of professionals from several specialties has been evaluated. Objectives To design a methodological strategy to evaluate the professional competencies of Hygiene and Epidemiology specialists, using the competence approach for this purpose. Methods Development research work performed at the National School of Public Health. Results The importance of this approach to attain successful work performance was stressed. The strategy design that covers phases, steps, sources and techniques were described in detail. Performance criteria together with three instruments to collect evidence on the existence of competencies in the specialist's work outputs were drafted. Conclusions The designed methodological strategy was presented. Its implementation for the evaluation of Hygiene and Epidemiology specialists contributes to detect the main problems in their work performance.
