Introduction: cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in Cuba and the world. Objective: to characterize scope of the health professionals' knowledge on the Global Cardiovascular Risk. Methods: an exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted from March 1st to June 31st, 2010. One part of La Habana del Este municipality which covers eight policlinics and the National Worker`s prophylactory a health center receiving a significant number of patients yearly- was chosen for the pilot study. The survey was applied to 102 professionals, including General Integral Medicine specialists and Bachelors of Nursing working in polyclinics located in the municipality and in the prophylactory. To this end, a ten-question survey designed by the main author was used. Results: most of the participating professionals had poor knowledge about the Global Cardiovascular Risk, its importance, about the ways to detect it and some diseases such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus and the renal disease that may influence over this risk. Conclusions: it is concluded that the surveyed professionals, most of them from the primary health care, lack the adequate knowledge to face the global cardiovascular risk.
