Abstract

SILVA GRACIANI, Fernanda  and  BONORA VIDRIH FERREIRA, Gabriel Luis. Environmental impact of drugs and their regulation in Brazil. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2014, vol.40, n.2, pp.265-270. ISSN 0864-3466.

This paper presented an analysis of the evolution of the standardized treatment to dispose of non-used or expired household medicines in Brazil, identifying the changes caused by the National Solid Waste policy and the current state of implementing reverse logistics in this segment. The main aspects related to the environmental impact and toxicological potential of residues of pharmaceuticals in the environment were highlighted. In this regard, the preparation of a sectoral agreement is under way in Brazil, which is aimed at setting the terms and obligations of all the involved parties in the supply chain regarding reverse logistics in the context of drugs and defining measures and processes that provide environmentally-friendly treatment of these wastes. The implementation of the reverse logistic in the field of medications in Brazil will raise awareness of consumers about the rational use of drugs, their timely elimination and the lower effect on the environment.

Keywords : drug disposal; solid waste; reverse logistics; environmental legislation.
