Abstract

MARTINEZ CALVO, Silvia. Criteria for debate on the existence of a Cuban School of Epidemiology. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2014, vol.40, n.3, pp. 369-377. ISSN 0864-3466.

It has been just over a decade since the publication of an article that began with the questioning about a possible Cuban School of Epidemiology; this issue was repetitive at the higher health service levels and in some other academic-teaching spaces in that period. As the issue is still valid, this article described an interesting exchange of ideas with the late and renowned Ecuadorian epidemiologist Edmundo Granda. The text, which pays tribute to his memory, is a modest contribution to current proposal for epidemiological work in health services in Cuba. The paper has an ad hoc structure, because the two Professor Granda's messages were transcribed showing their valuable and relevant views on the subject, followed by comments from the author and other criteria. It was concluded that, under the present circumstances of the epidemiological practice within the Cuban health system, it seems timely to review this exchange that elucidates and guides us to develop any strategy for change that responds to the necessary transformations that have been suggested.

Keywords : school; epidemiology; epidemiological practice; epidemiological work.
