Resumen

COUTIN MARIE, Gisele. Cuban mortality statistics in the 19th century and Dr Ambrosio Gonzales del Valle's contribution. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2017, vol.43, n.1. ISSN 0864-3466.

The study of mortality statistics attained a great development during the second half of the 19th century in several regions of the world. The obituary tables published by Dr Ambrosio Gonzales del Valle from 1869 to 1882 stood out in Cuba. The objective of the paper was to evaluate the significance of the obituary tables for the development of the Cuban mortality statistics. A descriptive study based on the historical method was conducted. A number of original documents from the archives of the Center of Historical and Science Organization Studies, the National Archives, "Jose Marti" national library, library of the department of history of the public health in the School of Health as well as publications about mortality statistics in Cuba, Spain, England, United States of America and Mexico, were all reviewed. This review included the study of the historical antecedents and the characteristics of the mortality statistics in Cuba and worldwide, the description of obituary tables, the analysis of variables for grouping mortality by sex, age, race, marital status, place of residence, period of the year), forms of data presentation, sources of information used, periodicity, scales of classification and their quality, reports on data precision, uniformity and systematization. It may be concluded that the obituary tables left a landmark in the Cuban statistics due to their complexity and reliability; they were highly appreciated and very much used by their contemporaries since they had the best information that the health statistics worldwide could offer at that time.
