Introduction:

Dentist care for the population presents a broad framework at primary health care, since the dentist associates much closely to the family doctor.

Objective:

To identify risk factors in pregnant women in Área Centro, Sancti Spíritus and to design and educational program.

Method:

A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. One hundred pregnant women formed the universe. Data were collected in a form designed by the authors. The information analysis was expressed in Stadistica, Package, Scentific, and Social (SPSS) in charts of absolute y relative distribution of frequency.

Results:

The largest number of pregnant women who attended the consultation was 66 % from the urban area. Seven percent had technical education. Age ranged 0 to 24 years (10.0 %). 39.0 % had pre-university education level, which was the most representative. The most frequent risk factors were history of cavities (67.0 %), and poor oral hygiene habits (63.0 %). An educational program was designed.

Conclusion:

The urban area was the most representative in consultations of pregnant women, the technical level was the majority in the occupational level, educational level was high school, and poor oral hygiene and cariogenic diet were the risk factors present. The educational program designed for improving the quality of health in pregnant women should eliminate these risk factors.
