Introduction:
The practice of risk management in patient safety is a way to maintain the safe delivery of health care at all levels. It involves preventive intervention and verification, so that senior management knows to what extent they have control of events.
Objective:
To relate the patient safety risk management guidelines with the knowledge and experience of the staff in an institution providing health services.
Methods:
A study was carried out with a qualitative analytical empirical approach. A semi-structured interview was applied to key informants by performance area and a documentary review was carried out. The analysis of the information was carried out through the coding of information according to analysis categories and the interpretation through confrontation with patient safety risk management guidelines.
Results:
There were different forms of relationship between the patient safety risk management guidelines with the knowledge and experiences of the staff, which depend on the performance area and organizational level.
Conclusions:
The diverse understanding of risk and the relevant elements for its management limits comprehensive risk management in patient safety, demanding articulation processes among organizational levels.
