Introduction:

The systematization of experiences is a method of producing knowledge from practice. In the present work it is applied in an investigation on genetic counseling in Cuba.

Objective:

Obtain coherent and sustained knowledge, generated from and for the practice, and communicate it, in order to contribute to the transformation and improvement of the practice of genetic counseling in the Cuban reality.

Methods:

A systematization of experiences was carried out, with a historical-dialectical approach. The systematized experiences were: conceptual framework, effectiveness and ethical aspects of genetic counseling in Cuba. Phases of this process were verified, from whose results learned lessons were obtained and compared with the existing theoretical knowledge and tasks were projected that led to the design of tools to improve the genetic counseling practice.

Results:

Lessons learned from the systematization were comprehension, distinction, identification and recognition of the components, relationships, functionality and impact of each experience, from which, the construction of a new conceptual framework, the evaluation of the effectiveness and ethical aspects of genetic counseling in affected families were projected and normative documents were designed.

Conclusions:

The systematization of experiences allowed obtaining elements that resulted in new knowledge at guides specialists in the creation of useful products, directly at the service of practice and transformation in a specific, important and strategic topic, genetic counseling, of special interest for the institutions involved and, eventually, for others outside of them.
