INFANTE, Danay; MARTINEZ, B; GONZALEZ, E  y  GONZALEZ, Noyma. Puccinia kuehnii (KRÜGER) BUTLER AND Puccinia melanocephala H. SYDOW AND P. SYDOW. IN SUGARCANE CROP. Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2009, vol.24, n.1, pp. 22-28. ISSN 2224-4697.

Sugarcane is attacked by two species of Puccinia: brown rust caused by Puccinia melanocephala and orange rust by Puccinia kuehnii. The first has prevailed in the American continent, while the second in Asia and Oceania. These rusts are different regarding environmental conditions, the ways of presenting symptoms, and their place of development. The greatest problem caused by brown rust has been observed during winter season, in plantations from 3 to 6 months, while orange rust is present and favored by moderate conditions. Brown rust has been a prevalent disease in Florida since 1970; however, recently symptoms related to orange rust appeared. The aim of this article was to make a compilation of information of rusts, attacking sugarcane crops, mainly orange rust which is a threat to the country.

Palabras clave : rusts; Puccinia melanocephala; Puccinia kueknii; sugarcane; Saccharum spp.
