Resumen

GONZALEZ, C  y  SURIS, Moraima. SPECIES OF THYSANOPTERANS ASSOCIATED WITH HOSTS OF INTEREST IN HAVANA PROVINCES. V. GRAINS, ROOTS, TUBERS AND TOBACCO. Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2009, vol.24, n.1, pp.35-38. ISSN 1010-2752.

Some species of thrips are considered pests of different crops and can cause direct damages by feeding or by the transmission of viral diseases in many crops. In Cuba, studies for determining the species of thrips associated to grains, roots, tubers and tobacco have been scarce. For detecting the presence of thrips on this group of plants, eight botanical species belonging to six families were sampled in nine municipalities in Havana province during 2003 and 2004. The specimens were collected by striking the plants over a white cardboard. The adults were cleared and mounted on slides by Mound and Marullo´s techniques; and for identification, regional taxonomic keys were used. Results indicated that among grains, beans obtained the highest richness of species with seven species, when compared with maize with three species of thrips. With regard to roots and tubers, the number of genera and species of thrips associated to these plants was variable. On potato plants, five species of thrips belonging to four genera and two families (Thripidae and Aeolothripidae) were detected.
