Abstract

HERNANDEZ BELLO, Wilfredo; GUTIERREZ VALDES, Antoinette M; GUERRERO RAMOS, Liliana  and  MORALES MOREJON, Melvin. Producción científica de y sobre Cuba procesada por la base de datos MEDLINE en el período 1986-1995. ACIMED [online]. 1999, vol.7, n.2, pp.104-114. ISSN 1024-9435.

A retrospective search was made in the MEDLINE data base aimed at establishing the fundamental features that characterized the scientific production of and about Cuba in the field of health sciences from 1986 to 1995. 788 references of papers of Cuban authors published in national and foreign journals were recovered as well as 620 references of studies by specialists from other countries with or whithout the cooperation of Cuba researchers. 2 116 Cuban authors were identified and 1 530 in the group that published about Cuba. The most frequent studies in both working groups developed in human adults, followed by children and adolescents. In spite of the fact that epidemiological studies are common for both groups, there were just a few publications from Cuban authors about AIDS and optical neuropathy, questions that arise the interest of foreign specialists. National authors published in 221 foreign journals. 242 periodical publications containing papers about Cuba were found. 109 Cuban institutions and 242 from abroad published papers of and about Cuba, respectively. The studies conducted by Cuban authors were published in 32 countries and those making reference to Cuba in 35. The journal article was the most used type of paper, whereas English was the predominant language. Cuban authors published more papers in 1990 and the foreign group in 1993. In both productions is observed a modest increase as regards the number of published papers after 1991 when there was a significant decrease.
