Abstract

Data connected with the evolution and characteristics of medical bibliography in general from the Ancient times until the end of the XVIII century are offered. Some of the circunstances that led to the emergence of Mercurio Volante, the first medical journal published in the American continent, are also explained. The bibliographic citations of the 16 issues of that Mexican publication that circulated are presented with a brief description of their content. It is the aim of this paper that the health information specialists and technicians as well as the professionals working in the medical field and its related disciplines, and those who may be interested in this topic have a concise and useful reference work about this jewel of the Latin American medical bibliography.
