Abstract

CANEDO ANDALIA, Rubén  and  ARENCIBIA JORGE, Ricardo. Bioinformatics: the search for the molecularsecrets of life. ACIMED [online]. 2004, vol.12, n.6, pp.1-1. ISSN 1024-9435.

The revelation of human genome complete secuence make possible the understanding of molecular causes of disease as well as the discovery of signification of genetic differences among human beings for the development of diseases. The research of XXI century will be devoted to the understanding of how genetic variants and environment regulate organs, tissues, cell, phenotype, and it´s precisely in this search where the bioinformatics is introduced, an emerged science that uses the new information technologies to gather, organize, analyze and supply biological information aim at answering complex questions on biology. Nevertheless the final objective is wider and is that of using this informatin to develop new methods to cure, manage and prevent diseases. But the way from gen, identification to the disclosure of effective treatments is long and complex. Thus challenge is established for biologists, informatics, doctors and librarians is health care field, in the case of librarians there is a need to acquire a basic instruction in topics related to molecular biosciences aimed at preparing and contributing to scientific communication efectiveness among several professions. Genomics, genomic based medicine, proteomics, epidemiology and genomic epidemiology, bioinformatics and it´s their relation with medical informatics are discussed. An informetric approach to the production on bioinformatics in the Web of Science from 2000 to 2004 was carried out. The analysis of scientific production on bioinformatics in the studied period showed a lineal growth that denotes an advance and spread in this new discipline.

Keywords : Bioinformatics; medical informatics; health librarians; convergence; medicine; genomics.
