The theoretical framework of digital libraries is described. A group of concepts that are useful to make the necessary distinctions between web sites and digital libraries is presented. The new service paradigm oriented to users, as well as the thematic or specialized digital libraries are dealt with on the basis of an in-deep study of a group of art libraries selected for this study.
