A series of theoretical and conceptual aspects related to the knowledge networks, such as origin, definition, characteristics, architecture, typology and limitations is analysed, as well as their links to virtual knowledge communities of history, characteristics, limitations, benefits and architecture. Finally, the virtual communities are analyzed as a new type of knowledge network.
