In order to explain he foundations   and elements that characterize the free software movement, a brief history of the origin and evolution of this movement is made: the GNU project, the appearance   of Linux, the programs of open source code, the copyleft and the licenses for this kind of software. Finally, some of the main free software oriented to the library sphere are presented,.
