Abstract

LOPEZ ESPINOSA, José Antonio. The first Cuban Surgery textbook . ACIMED [online]. 2006, vol.14, n.2. ISSN 1024-9435.

Information related to the contribution of Dr. Nicolas José Gutiérrez Hernández to the progress of medical sciences in Cuba , in general, and of surgery, in particular, during the 19th century is offered, giving a special emphasis to his contribution to the national medical bibliography. A critical analysis of the content of the book “Breve manual de Medicina operatoria dispuesto en lecciones para el curso del año 1839” (Brief manual of operative medicine arranged in lessons for the course of 1839) prepared by doctor Gutiérrez for its utilization as a basic text for the first course of operative medicine taught by him in Havana, is made. It is stressed the importance of the work as a resource that allowed to free surgery from the backwardness in which it was in the island, and as a bibliographical relic for being the first Cuban book devoted to the teaching of this discipline
