An approach to the specialized literature in the area of the information sciences reveals important points of connection between the processes of information audit and consultancy. As regards the convergences and divergences among the professions of those who carry out these activities, in this contribution, some theoretical matters related to the information professionals in general and to the consultants and auditors as professions in particular, are dealt with.  The keys of the audit and consultancy processes are briefly explained. Finally, a cross profile of these professionals according to definition, tasks, competences and required abilities, is presented
